Instant takeaways from the BU women's basketball team's 69-61 loss to Georgetown
Senior captain Alex Giannaros led the Terriers with 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting, but poor defensive rebounding undid BU in a tight loss against a high-major opponent.
BOSTON — Instant takeaways from the BU women’s basketball team’s 69-61 loss against Georgetown at Case Gym on Wednesday afternoon…
Alex Giannaros is one of one
Alex Giannaros had one of her best games in a BU uniform. The senior captain finished with 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting and 5 for 7 from 3. She did not miss a shot until the 5:05 mark of the fourth quarter. Â
BU fell into a hole early, down 16-6 in the first quarter. Giannaros pulled the Terriers out of it, scoring eight points in a quarter-ending 11-2 run, capped by a step-back 3-pointer in the left corner.Â
Her shot-making continued throughout, with multiple big-time 3s in the third and fourth quarters that kept BU within striking distance.Â
Aoibhe Gormley did not look like her normal self
Gormley did not look like herself, both literally and figuratively. Gormley is seemingly dealing with an injury that she decided to play through, as she wore a black protective mask in the first half. She struggled mightily.Â
Gormley was scoreless in the first half and had no assists and three turnovers. She played 12 minutes and 14 seconds in the opening half, earning a team-worst negative-16 plus-minus. BU’s second-worst mark was just minus-five from freshman forward Channing Warren in just 2:31.Â
Entering the second half, Gormley ditched the mask entirely. Still, she continued to struggle.Â
Gormley didn’t score on four shots, nor did she dish out an assist, and she finished with a minus-22 plus-minus.
BU gave up too many second chances
BU primarily played zone defense and made offense difficult for the Hoyas on the initial shot. The Terriers, however, struggled to match up on their box outs and were punished for it. The Hoyas collected six offensive rebounds in the first half which led to eight second-chance points. BU head coach Melissa Graves looked increasingly frustrated each time the Terriers gave up an extra look.Â
The second-chance opportunities came at crucial times in the second half. Down 60-54, the closest BU had been since the 3:18 mark of the third quarter, with just over six minutes remaining, the Terriers gave up an uncontested offensive rebound and putback to Georgetown’s Jayden McBride.Â
Down just two, 62-60, with under four minutes to go, BU gave up an offensive rebound and layup to Ariel Jenkins. That putback sparked a 7-1 Hoya run and cost the Terriers a chance at an offensive possession to tie or take the lead.Â
The Hoyas finished with 14 second-chance points and 11 offensive rebounds.
